A controversial mannequin at a Reading restaurant is the topic of another debate at the town's meeting Monday evening.
K-T's Barbecue owner Kenny Tessel is fighting for the right to display his scantily clad mannequin outside of the restaurant. Tessel will appeal a ruling by Reading's Design Review Board at 6:30 p.m.
In May the board ruled that the mannequin can stay; however, they set limits on where she can stand and what she can wear.
Bar-Bee-Q started out as a clever marketing ploy that increased K-T Barbecue's business by 30 percent, Tessel says. But the mannequin, often seen in shorts and a bikini top, is a source of public disagreement.
“The mannequin is sensational and tasteless,” said Chris Broerman, a Reading resident. “Not the image residents in Reading want in their neighborhood."
Tessel says business has skyrocketed since the mannequin got national attention.
"I'm a small business guy and I needed to stay alive and stay open,” Tessel said. “And she's created this opportunity for me."
