Reports out Thursday confirm speculation that Republican Senator John McCain will use a campaign stop Friday in Dayton as the opportunity to unveil his running mate.

McCain's appearance at Dayton's Nutter Center at Wright State University has been planned for some time.  But now it appears the campaign stop will suddenly take on a much bigger meaning to him.

McCain's appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. with a rally beforehand.

It will come one day after the Democratic National Convention wraps up and will take place in the crucial swing state of Ohio.

The appearance could fuel speculation that Ohio Congressman Rob Portman will be McCain's selection.  But Portman's name does not appear to still be on many speculated short lists.

Many feel former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, current Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and independent Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut are the candidates to beat.
