CINCINNATI (AP) -- Two Cincinnati policemen have filed a class action lawsuit challenging city rules that prohibit them from supporting political candidates on their own time.
After being warned of pending legal action, the city said Tuesday that its employees could donate to presidential candidates.
But it still prohibits employees from donating to and volunteering for other partisan campaigns.
The suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court seeks a reversal of those rules and an undisclosed amount in damages.
Attorney Al Gerhardstein says his clients' lawsuit is "the ultimate example of bipartisanship" in the name of civil rights.
One officer supports Republican John McCain, and the other favors Democrat Barack Obama.
A hearing is set for Thursday.
