In the beginning of a new riding season, one Ohio department is taking steps to reduce motorcycle fatalities and injuries with a new campaign.

Motorcycle Ohio, part of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, kicked off the 'Ride SMART' motorcycle safety campaign on Thursday.

The acronym 'Ride SMART' stands for Ride Sober. Ride Motorcycle Endorsed. Ride Alert. Use the Right Gear. Ride Trained.

Officials say though overall fatalities on Ohio roads have gone down, motorcycle fatalities have gone up 35 percent in the last three years.

MO and its partners want to remind both drivers and motorcycle riders that everyone plays a part in motorcycle safety.

They will be spreading the message by distributing materials with safety messages at places that host 'Bike Nights.' MO will also work with law enforcement to host training courses, teach motorcycle training courses in Spanish and airing public service announcments.
