A local police officer is in critical condition after he was struck during an early morning police chase on I-75.
The chase began after a man held up a Walgreens on
Cincinnati Dayton Road near Tylersville Road in West Chester at gunpoint just before 6 a.m. Monday.
The man reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle southbound on Interstate 75, with police in pursuit.
According to authorities, a Lockland police officer placing stop sticks along the interstate near the Lockland and
Shepherd Lane exits was struck by another officer during the chase.
The Lockland officer has been identified as 23-year-old Brandon Gehring, who has been with the department for two years. He is currently listed in critical condition at University Hospital.
The officer that struck Gehring is 29-year-old Kevin Burger. He is a five-year veteran of the West Chester Police Department.
Cincinnati police caught up with the robbery suspect a short time later near the intersection of
Vine Street and East Clifton Avenue in Over-the-Rhine and arrested him. He has been identified as 32-year-old Thomas Joyce. Police say he has prior contacts with law enforcement.
Southbound I-75 has reopened after being closed for several hours.
The accident remains under investigation by The Ohio State Highway Patrol.
