Health care reform takes center stage tonight as President Barack Obama outlines his proposal to get help to 50 million uninsured Americans.
ABC will televise what's being called a "Primetime Conversation with the President."
Both parties agree the current system is broken. The difference of opinion comes with how to fix it.
President Obama sat down with ABC's Diane Sawyer to continue his push for a new health care system.
"We know that we are going to reform this system and I'm confident that if everybody puts their mind to it, we can get it done," the president said.
President Obama is promising to work with Congress to pass legislation before the end of the year.
The plan calls for spending more than $1 trillion to extend health care to 50 million uninsured Americans over 10 years.
"We've identified $6 billion that will be reallocated from existing health care expenditures by the government, to do that, we've suggested that we should take the deductions that currently wealthy people like myself or you take. Drive them back down to 28 percent. If we did that, that affects two to three percent of the population," the president said.
The president's plan has already drawn opposition.
Some in the health care industry and republicans warn a public plan for health care could lead to a government takeover of the industry.
Alex Triantafilou, the Chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party, says, "The Obama plan appears to make it so that government gets into competing in the private sector and that's not government's role. What government ought to do is create an environment that incentivizes private businesses to make it more affordable and that's the republican plan."
"What would be irresponsible is to leave the system we have today. We know it's not working. We've got to find a solution that delivers quality health care to the American people," said Tim Burke, Chairman of the Democratic Party.
You can watch the ABC News special: Questions for the President: Prescription for America tonight at 10 p.m. on Channel 9.
