WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- The State of Ohio helped West Chester residents start to tackle their coyote problem Wednesday evening.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources held a meeting to discuss wildlife management techniques. Officials also visited neighborhoods where the coyote population has become most prevalent.

The goal was to provide suggestions on how to deal with the problem in the future, and to calm fears about family pets.

Just recently, a West Chester family's dog was killed by a coyote in some nearby woods.

Brett Beatty with the Ohio Wildlife Division says for the most part, coyotes will keep to themselves.

But if you're still worried, you are the biggest asset you have, he says.

'People will deter coyotes from an area. If you let your pet out at night and you know there are, or there have been issues in your area, I would go out with your dog and to offer extra protection,” said Beatty.

However, Beatty says it is uncommon for coyotes to attack large dogs even if they're by themselves.
