Northwest School District School Levy's Fate Hinges On Provisional Ballots

Cuts are possible in another Hamilton County school district after a tax levy failed on Tuesday by just 38 votes.

The Northwest school district still hopes provisional ballots and a recount turn the "No" vote into "Yes."

However, Superintendent Rick Gladfelter says he has to consider other options.

They include cutting another million dollars by increasing lunch prices next fall, trimming maintenance expenses and doing away with elective courses at Northwest and Colerain high schools.

"We would be eliminating seven high school teachers between our two high schools, and each one of those teachers teaches approximately 140-students a day," said Rick Glatfelter, Northwest Schools Superintendent.

"So, therefore, there would be over 1,000 students added to study hall at the high schools because the courses they teach would be eliminated," said the superintendent.

Glatfelter said he hopes that could be done through attrition.

Another possibility is going back on the ballot next March, with a bigger levy that could fund restoration of full bussing services.
