NEWPORT, Ky. -- The Fraternal Order of Police in Newport agreed on a new three-year contract which includes a pay freeze for at least the upcoming year, but does not include cutting jobs or benefits.
The city of Newport has frozen police pay for the past four years. Pay freezes are looked at on a year to-year-basis.
The most important point of the contract was that no jobs would be lost. The city hasn't had layoffs, but they have reduced staff through attrition the past few years.
The city has cut costs by more than $1 million in the past year and has decreased its debt from $3 million to $200,000 in the past five years.
