Miami University Celebrates 200th Birthday

A Tri-State University is celebrating an event that is 200 years in the making.

Tuesday marks 200 years since Miami University in Oxford, Ohio was founded, and the university has big plans to mark the occasion.

The official Charter Day Celebration is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Millet Hall on Miami's campus. The 90 minute program will feature videos, music and special presentations that reflect on the past, present and future of the university.  The celebration is open to everyone.

Miami University is the 10th oldest public university in the United States. It was charted in 1809 and was named for the Miami Indian Tribe who lived in the area during that time.

The University opened its doors to 20 students in 1824. Today, more than 21,000 undergraduates and graduates students attend classes at the school.
