Miami U. Student Apologizes For Racially Offensive Art Display

Last Update: 10/31/2007 11:08 am
A Miami University undergrad was questioned by police on Tuesday after officials say he participated in a group art project that included hanging nooses from trees on the Oxford campus.

Several passing students confronted the participating students who were hanging the nooses and a tire swing from trees in the area. One of the students explained to the group that the display was not racially motivated and apologized for the actions, and the display was taken down after police arrived on the scene.

“I strongly condemn this display and deplore that in this campus community any person would believe this display is in any way acceptable," said Miami University President David Hodge. "We must redouble our efforts as a community to educate every student here on the historic patterns of racism in this society.”

President Hodge has said he is willing to meet with any students, staff and faculty on Wednesday morning who want to discuss Tuesday's actions.

“I ask all persons in this community to engage in discussions about the meaning of the incident and the steps we must take to make this a community free of prejudice and welcoming to all,” Hodge said.

“I am surprised and disappointed to see that this incident has taken place on our campus," added James Lentini, dean of the School of Fine Arts at Miami. "There are established protocols for the display of controversial art in public spaces [...] Typical guidelines would dictate that a potentially offensive display should be in a place where safeguards prevent unintended viewing by the public. This incident prompts a call for a review of best practices regarding standards for artistic expression and exhibition.”
