Memorial Service Held For Homeless, Advocates

Last Update: 12/20/2007 11:17 pm

Tributes were paid Thursday to homeless people and advocates who died during 2007.

A memorial service was held in Washington Park for the 27 homeless individuals and three social service workers who died this year.

Their names were read as a bell rung for each of them.

A candle was then lit to signify their lives had stories and meaning.

"The majority of them passed away due to health-related issues that comes from the stress of living on the street," said Georgine Getty, of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless.

"Two people were murdered. Two people died of exposure. One person was crushed when he was sleeping in a trash dumpster. One was killed working day labor," said Getty. "So, it was an exceptionally hard and dangerous year for homeless people."

It's estimated that on an average night there are 1,300 people sleeping in shelters, in cars or on the streets.
