Mason residents are encouraged to bring a donated item to support the troops at this Friday's Fourth of July celebration.

The City of Mason is teaming up with Operation: Thank You to sponsor donations to send to local units serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Items are currently being collected at barrels at Mason firehouses.

They'll also be collected at the city's Red, Rhythm and Boom Independence Day Celebration this Friday.

"We wanted to remember the reason for our independence. There's a lot of people who contributed to make that independence. A lot of troops who out there who are still fighting for our independence all over the world and we wanted to remember them and support them," said Jennifer Trepal, City of Mason Spokesperson.

Items recommended for donation include snacks, canned food, personal care items, soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant, socks, DVDs, music, cards, games, books, puzzles, paper and pens, greeting cards and batteries.

Operation: Thank You supports the U.S. military with cards, letters of encouragement and support, and care packages filled with basic items to make their downtime more enjoyable and relaxing.

Donation barrels will be located at each shuttle site and at the park. Anyone wishing to donate items before the Red, Rhythm & Boom celebration can take their items to either Mason fire station. Station 51 is on Mason-Montgomery Road, near Main Street. Station 52 is at 5500 Cedar Village Drive.
