CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina -- An investigation is underway after a Marine with ties to the Tri-State was murdered in North Carolina.
The military says the body of Joshua Hartzell, 22, was found in a wooded area at Camp Lejeune on Friday.
Private Jonathan Law, 21, is in custody. He was at a local hospital for treatments of self-inflicted wounds. Charges against him are pending.
Hartzell had been in the Marines for three years after growing up in Hamilton and attending Ross High School.
The military has released few details about Hartzell's death, other than to say that he was not shot.
Both men served in the 2nd Marine logistics group and each had received several medals.
Hartzell had also been awarded a medal for good conduct.
Hartzell's sister, Sarah, released a statement that says in part, "We are extremely heartbroken over the tragic loss of our Josh. He was everything a real marine should be: a gentleman and a leader."
The prinicipal of Ross High School, Lani Wildow, is out of town, but she tells me that Joshua Hartzell, or "Josh" as they called him, was a well-liked student and wrestler who consistently got good grades.
When he was on leave from the Marines, Wildow says Hartzell would often come back to Ross High to help with the wrestling team. She says he and his helping spirit will be solely missed at the high school.
