ELSMERE, Ky. - A homicide investigation is underway in Elsmere, Ky., after firefighters discovered the body of a man inside his burned out mobile home.
The Erlanger Police crime scene van is on the scene at the Allendale Mobile Home Park to assist in the investigation of the death of 41-year-old resident Kenneth Croy.
Croy's body was found in the rear of his mobile home, at 59 Eagle Drive, after Elsmere firefighters put out the fire that had engulfed it.
Firefighters were initially called to the scene just after 4 Thursday morning. Although initial reports indicated there might be people in the burning mobile home, firefighters could find no one inside. They then focused on putting out the fire, which quickly engulfed the rear of the home.
Only after the flames were extinguished, did firefighters find the body of Kenneth Croy, who lived in the home.
That's when firefighters called in Elsmere and Erlanger Police detectives to help.
Elsmere Detective Dennis McCarthy says, "We're handling this as a homicide investigation. We've called in extra officers and detectives to help us go over the fire scene, so we can determine exactly what happened."
Just after sun up, 9News could finally get a chance to see the extent of damage to the mobile home. Much of the rear of the home is destroyed.
Police refuse to speculate on what may have killed Croy, or whether he might have died before the fire started.
Neighbors have taken in Croy's German Shepherd, so he can stay close to home. They say he was married with a 2-year-old son. Both his wife and son were not in the mobile home when the fire broke out.
