Doctors say a Lockland police officer injured along I-75 Monday morning suffered multiple injuries.
Officer Brandon Gehring remains in critical condition at University Hospital.
Investigators say the 23-year-old Gehring was placing stop sticks near the Lockland and Shepherd Lane exits.
He was struck, by accident, by West Chester Police Officer Kevin Burger.
Officer Burger was pursuing an armed robbery suspect when the accident occurred around 6 a.m.
Doctors say Gehring has been heavily sedated in the surgical ICU unit at University Hospital.
Officer Gehring had a lot of people rushing to his side.
Not only his family members, but also others who consider themselves to be part of his family from various Tri-state police and fire departments.
"We are one big family, no matter what department you are from. When something like this happens, we all come together. We're actually here for support," said Chris White, of the Cincinnati Fire Department.
The Lockland Police Department, where Gehring has worked for the past two years, has been receiving a lot of support from the community.
"We are all gravely concerned for Officer Gehring. He's one of our fellow officers. He's a good kid. I've personally have known officer Gehring since he was four-years-old. I remember him when he used to ride his bicycle up and down the street," said Lieutenant Terrance Wilkerson of the Lockland Police Department.
Dr. Jay Johannigman says it's too early to talk about Gehring's recovery.
He says Gehring suffered multiple injuries to his body including his chest, lung, shoulder, and spinal cord.
"We certainly want to get the patient through the first 24 hours. We are constantly re-evaluating and updating our information and gaining more information, evaluating our x-rays, evaluating the patient's response. It's way too early to tell," said Dr. Johannigman of the University Hospital Trauma and Critical Care and Surgery Department.
Lockland Police say Gehring loved his job.
They say he also worked as a volunteer firefighter in Lockland.
His family has worked as police and firefighters in Greater Cincinnati.
His family has set-up a fund in Brandon Gehring's name. Donations can be made at any Fifth Third Bank branch.
