SEVEN MILE, Ohio -- The tragedy at Fort Hood on Thursday rattled the entire U.S. Army, because it happened where soldiers though they would be safe.

Authorities say Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, went on a shooting spree that left 13 people dead and 30 injured.

United States Army Sergeant Alan Walker was once stationed at Fort Hood and told 9News at his Butler County home just how painful the losses actually are.

"I never believed anybody would do something like this on a military installation," Walker said.

Walker said he joined the Military to honor his country.

"The idea of serving my country, it being able to identify with those veterans that wear the hats and purple hearts and bronze stars. I fell like I'm giving back to a lot of what America has given to me," Walker said.

He and his family were stationed in Fort Hood from 2007 until this year. The Walker family told of many friends and colleagues that became their family during their stay at the post.

When they learned of the shooting rampage that killed 13 colleagues Thursday, Walker's wife, Kimberly, started calling for information. She reached her daughter's former school teacher Friday morning.

"The good news was yesterday they dismissed [the elementary school] at 1 p.m., before all this happened. So all the elementary kids got to go home, but the teachers were in lock down until after seven o'clock, in the teachers lounge," said Kimberly

The Walker's do not believe they know anyone who was killed or injured at the building where the shooting spree happened. But they are grieving because they say, the military is like family.

"They are never going to be with us again.... You just feel that bond to them like you know who they are," said Sgt. Walker.
