FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky officials say a new mobile pharmacy unit has been acquired to provide services during disasters and emergencies.

Health Commissioner William D. Hacker says the 28-foot-long mobile pharmacy trailer could be sent to the site of an emergency and would allow pharmacists to provide a wide range of services, including patient counseling and care, immunizations, public health education, medication preparation and dispensing.

The mobile pharmacy unit can utilize members of the Kentucky Pharmacists Association as volunteers to provide care.

A statement from the Kentucky Department for Public Health and the Kentucky Pharmacists Association on Tuesday said funding for the mobile unit was provided through a federal grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
