A valiant effort was made to rescue a  horse trapped in a Boone County creek Thursday afternoon.

Officials say a neighbor discovered the horse, whose name is “Cool Hand Luke,” submerged up to his head in a creek near Woolper and Snyder roads Thursday morning.

The owner was afraid the 28-year-old Tennessee Walker may have been trapped in the creek since Monday. That was the last time anyone saw him before this morning.

After four hours, Luke was finally rescued. However, he was having trouble standing up and a veterinarian feared Luke developed pneumonia after taking in too much water.

Hay was placed around the horse in hopes he would be able to stand up on his own.

However, 9News has learned “Luke" did not survive the trauma.
