A Colerain Township elementary school is forced to cancel classes after a hit-and-run damaged the building and cut off its water Wednesday morning.
According to authorities, a car struck a fire hydrant in front of Greener Elementary School on
Adams Road around 3 a.m. The impact reportedly ruptured the attached water main, cutting off water supply to the area.
Police arrived on the scene to find water shooting several feet into the air, but the car and driver were gone.
A short time later, officers found the abandoned vehicle about a half mile away, in the middle of Adams Road. Police say the car had been damaged and disabled by the impact. Officers took a woman into custody at the scene, but will not confirm if she was the driver.
According to police, the car also struck the nearby Greener Elementary, causing some structural damage. There was no one in the building at the time. The Mt. Healthy City School District decided to close the school for the day Wednesday due to the lack of water and damage to the building.
The ruptured water main sent a large amount of water across the roadway, prompting crews to close Adams Road and Miles Road while water works crews worked to stop the flow. A salt truck was also called in to deal with icing on the roadway. Officials began reopening the area to traffic around 6 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Colerain Police Department at (513)385-7504 or the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office at (513)825-1500.
