Lester Douglas lost his sister at the hands of an 18-year-old Anthony Kirkland. That was 22 years ago.

"I blame the system because the system should not let nobody out on the street that's that violent," said Douglas.

Douglas lost his sister, Leola Douglas, to Kirkland who beat and then burned her. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated arson. He served 16-years.

"As far as I'm concerned, I feel very, very sorry for the family of Esme Kenney – and if there's anything I could do to help, I'd be glad to," said Douglas.

Douglas held a photo of his mother and late sister in front of his Pleasant Ridge apartment.

He says it was five years after his sister's death before he could bear to put it back on his wall.

"I couldn't even look at it. I lost it," said Douglas. "Even today, I'm still having issues about it you know.""Actually, I had to get professional help and I'm still dealing with professional help," continued Douglas.

9News asked him if the new case involving the murder of 13-year-old Esme Kenney re-opens the wound from 1987.

"Actually, it just makes it even worse because what he did to my sister was bad enough, but for him to do it to a kid – she hasn't even grown yet and he took that away from that family –and he took it away from our family, too," said Douglas.
