Hamilton County officials are expected to make an announcement Monday that could result in nearly 500 employees losing their jobs.

The Hamilton County Administrator is scheduled to present the county's 2009 budget to the county commission at 9:30 Monday morning.

County Officials say they have to come up with a way to offset a nearly $40 million revenue shortfall that has resulted from a dip in sales tax collections, a dismal real estate market and other tax declines.

Officials say tough economic times are forcing them to make hard choices.  As a result, the budget is expected to include cuts that could cost hundreds of county workers their jobs.

The county currently employees 5,900 workers, and officials say up to 500 of them could lose their jobs because of the proposed cuts.
