The Ohio State Fire Marshal and Union Township officials are investigating an accident that left a two-year-old child with second-degree burns on the Fourth of July.

"At this point we're getting conflicting stories as to what actually occurred," said Sergeant Eric Williams of the Union Township police department.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. Friday night.

Emergency crews responded to the 4700 block of Shepherd Road.

"I can say there are various types of fireworks that are in and around the residence," said Sgt. Williams.

In fact, 9News spotted dozens of mortar-style fireworks in the back of the home.

Police say the 52-year-old woman was transported to University Hospital and the two-year-old was taken to Children's Hospital.

"At this point there looks to be second-degree burns over 50% of their bodies," continued Sgt. Williams.

Three other people were also reported injured.

The State Fire Marshal and Union Township fire and police will investigate the incident jointly.

Many of the fireworks in the back of the home are illegal to posess in the state of Ohio.
