COVINGTON, Ky. -- A Kenton County judge granted Fidelity Investments a three-year extension to increase its number of employees from the current workforce of about 3,900 to a total of 4,250 employees.

The company now has until December 2013 to reach that target number of people working at its Covington office.

Currently, there are about 3,900 employees.

Fidelity agreed to hire 4,250 people as part of an incentive package in which the state highway department, Kenton County and the City of Covington agreed to pay jointly for the $17.5 million connector road from KY-17 to Fidelity's building.

The company asked for the extension in light of the downturn of the market.

If the company fails to meet the employment mark by the extended deadline, it will have to pay state and local governments $5,000 for each employee less than the 4,250 goal.
