Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations kicked off with a breakfast at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Monday morning.
The MLK Coalition March left the Freedom Center and headed up Vine Street to Fountain Square for an interfaith prayer service before they marched to Music Hall.
Singer, Kathy Wade performed at the breakfast. Wade says it’s an honor to be a part of history. She has sung for President-elect Obama.
Wade says it’s wonderful to see King’s vision come true. "To know that there’s this legacy of Martin Luther King, the work, the struggle, the hurt, the power, the pain, all of that. People continuously say I didn’t think I’d see it in my lifetime. I am one of those highly optimistic people, so why not in my lifetime?"
A program celebrating King's life achievements took place at Noon at Music Hall.
