Delta and its Alliance partners are offering $1 billion to Japan Airlines to lure it away from American Airlines Wednesday.

The odd thing is that Japan Airlines just reported $1.5 billion in losses in the first half of the current fiscal year and it's asking for government help in dealing with its creditors.

Delta says it hopes to draw the airline into its Sky Team Alliance.

Japan Airlines is Asia's largest airline and is seen as a valuable partner because of its routes in China and Japan.
