BATAVIA, Ohio (AP) -- A two-year-old girl found dead inside a
sweltering sport utility vehicle was there for at least seven hours
and died of systemic hyperthermia, or heat-related causes, a
coroner's office said Friday.
Cecilia Slaby was strapped in a car seat in the rear of the
vehicle, which was in the parking lot of Glen Este Middle
School Thursday, where her mother is an assistant principal, according to
police in Union Township near Batavia.
The girl was in the vehicle from at least 8 a.m. until about 3
p.m., said Debbie Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Clermont County
coroner's office.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving
several 911 calls about 3:15 p.m.
Police did not say who placed the
calls.
Temperatures in the area reached 100 degrees Thursday, according
to the National Weather Service.
Clermont County Prosecutor Don White said the girl's death was
apparently an accident and no decision would be made on whether the
mother, Brenda Nesselroad-Slaby, would be charged with a crime
until after police finish their investigation.
Nesselroad-Slaby was apparently at the middle school for a
faculty meeting, said Union Township police Lt. Scott Gaviglia.
Classes are to begin Monday at the school, about 20 miles east of
Cincinnati.
