Reported by:
John MatareseThe liquidation sales have begun at the 155
Circuit City stores around the country that are going out of business by the end of the year, as the troubled chain cuts 20% of its stores.
But how good are the deals? We wandered through one of the stores now holding a liquidation, and found many shoppers checking out the sales as well.
But during our half hour there, we did not see many shoppers making big purchases. Several told us they didn't see too many great markdowns.
One reason for the disappointment: only a slight discount off list price this first week. The initial discounts:
- Closing stores are offering just 10% off list price on TV's, Cameras, and Computers, the most in-demand items. Some bloggers claim the liquidation prices are higher than the weekly sale prices just a few weeks ago!
- A better deal: the 15% discount off furniture, such as TV stands.
- The Best deal right now: 20% off DVD's.
The discounts will get better each week, with liquidators saying they will continue to mark down merchandise until it is all sold.
But one caution: No returns for any reason, not even to a store remaining open.
If something doesn't work properly, or parts are missing from the box, you have to deal with the manufacturer, under the manufacturer's warranty.
You cannot return anything you buy. Circuit City no longer owns the merchandise in its closing stores.
Your best bet? Keep checking, and compare prices online. You may find a great deal on TVs and other items in a week or two. As always, dont waste your money. I'm John Matarese.
