A local organization is helping to fight hunger this holiday season thousands of miles away.

Over 600 volunteers will pack high protein meals to ship to Guatemala Saturday morning.

It's part of a program called Kids Against Hunger. Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. they will hold a special Pack-A-Thon for the starving children in Guatemala.

It will take place alone Hunt Road In Blue Ash at the former Kroger building.

The public is invited to this outreach initiative from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. to see the volunteer process, to taste the food being produced and to see the pictures of the starving children.

All of the food ingredients for the meals are purchased from donations given by business groups, schools, churches, families and others.

Since September, officials say the children in Central America are facing serious famine issues.

The UN World Food Programme reports that in Guatemala, a country made up of 13 million people, about 50 percent of children under age five suffer from mal nourishment.

Since the non-profit charity opened in the Cincinnati area, more than 1.6 million food packets have been delivered locally, nationally, and internationally.

Officials say by donating $10 per month is enough to provide life saving food for a hungry child.
