Cincinnati Council Members Debate Cutting Budget

In the light of falling tax revenues, should Cincinnati drastically start cutting its budget right now, or should it wait? That's the question being asked at Cincinnati City Hall on Friday.

With tax revenues to the city already projected to be down almost $8 million, some city council members are expected to call for a new round of budget cutting now, to prevent bigger money problems for the city later this year.

Already, Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney has asked all department heads to submit their proposals for how to cut their budgets by 5 percent immediately.  But dohoney that's a "just in case" or "worse case" scenario for the city.

However, some council members say with even lower tax revenues possible through this year, they want to begin budget cutbacks as soon as possible.

Council members Jeff Berding and Chris Bortz have already called an 11:30 a.m. news conference Friday morning to press their case for tightening up the city budget now.

But Mayor Mark Mallory and Council Finance Committee chairwoman Laketa Cole say, not so fast and they feel we don't need to start considering worker furloughs or layoffs, just yet.

They both want to hold off considering additional cuts until they get more revenue projections in June.
