Years ago, the NFL suspended stars Paul Hornung and Alex Karas for betting on sports events. While that may be too dated for some, certainly you've heard about Pete Rose's gambling addiction and subsequent lifetime banishment from any activity related to Major League Baseball.

All well and good. After all, the rules about gambling and potential consequences are clearly stated outside every professional sports clubhouse.

Yet every NFL game begins with a coin toss. Innocent enough until they employ another to begin overtime periods. Statistically the team that wins the flip before overtime, wins far more often than it loses.

Likewise baseball settles tie breakers at the end of the season, determining home field advantage, with the flip of a coin. I've said for years both represent the heighth of hypocrisy.

A coin flip, is a game of chance, is gambling. Am I alone here?

Apparently not. Thursday baseballs general managers agreed to study a formula to settle tie breaks based on wins and losses. Betcha it doesn't pass the first time they vote on it. Lets go 2 out of 3.
