400 Ky. Soldiers To Return Home From Afghanistan

Last Update: 3/05 1:57 pm
ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky National Guard officials say 400 soldiers who deployed for Afghanistan last March are expected to arrive home Thursday.

Soldiers from the 201st Engineer Battalion are expected to arrive by bus at the Boyd County Middle School Gymnasium in Ashland for a welcome home ceremony. The battalion consists of units from Ashland, Olive Hill, Cynthiana and Prestonsburg.

The soldiers were responsible for clearing hundreds of acres of mine fields and destroying more than 14,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance in Afghanistan.

Guard officials say Gov. Steve Beshear plans to attend the welcome home ceremony.
