Naming contest for zoo's baby giraffe
Giraffe born at Cincinnati Zoo

CINCINNATI - The latest addition to the Cincinnati Zoo has been named.

The female baby giraffe born earlier this month has been named Zuri, which is Swahili for beautiful. Officials at the zoo allowed the public to help name her in a Facebook campaign followed by an online vote for the top three.

Other contenders were Mara, which is Maasai for spotted and Nya, Swahili for purpose. More than 9,000 people participated.

Zuri was born on Saturday, April 2. Her mother, Tessa, and father, Kimba, are in their indoor stall at Giraffe Ridge. Visitors can see the giraffes through windows until Tessa and Zuri make their debut in a couple of weeks.
