CINCINNATI - With every January come new hopes and expectations for job seekers looking to get back into the workforce or change employment.
According to one local economic expert, Greater Cincinnati can expect 2014 to bring slow but steady overall growth in the job market--with some sectors looking brighter than others.
Michael Jones, Director of Research at the University of Cincinnati Economics Center, answered questions about the region's economic and employment health and to shared insights about what to expect on the local job market for 2014.
1. In general, economically and employment-wise, how is the region doing?
Overall, the number of jobs is higher than it was a year ago. If you look year over year, the exact numbers were up several thousand employees from November of 2012. We're up in payroll, but it really matters what sector you're looking at.
2. How fast are we recovering jobs lost?
We're moving forward but probably not as quickly as we would like. Some of the sectors are slowing us down. Manufacturing was one; we expected to see higher growth this year. But if you look at manufacturing employment numbers, they're virtually flat, year over year, in Cincinnati.
We have a fairly large manufacturing base here in the state of Ohio. Industries like manufacturing have faced a lot of international pressure from companies who can compete with lower wages, who can compete with lower costs in terms of commodities and so the State of Ohio and Cincinnati faces a lot of competitive pressure in manufacturing.
And government has kind of dragged us down, too. If you look at the number of workers who are employed in government, we've lost a couple thousand in the Cincinnati region over the last year as well.
3. What sectors tend to be hiring
We see a lot of growth in the healthcare sector over the last year. You've got a lot of hospitals here. I think Cincinnati Children's is building a new facility and Christ Hospital may be building. There's a lot of new projects in the works. UC, I think, is building seven new facilities or renovating, also. In particular,
in the Cincinnati region, we've got a great medical school that's generating a lot of new doctors and with the university itself, there's a lot of research in this area. In terms of healthcare, there's a lot of really world-class institutions. When you think about what we do really well here in Cincinnati compared to the state, and the country in general, we really do have a good foundation in healthcare.
4. What's the outlook for skilled vs. non-skilled workers?
Having an education always matters. If you look at unemployment rates by degree, I want to say the unemployment rate for those who have at least a college degree is either at or right under five percent. It's much lower than it is if you have either a high school degree or not even a high school degree. Then it's double-digit rates of unemployment.
5. How does the employment situation look beyond 2014?
That's tough. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will actually put out employment projections through 2022, so economists will try to forecast five, 10 years out. But I don't put a lot of stock in those, because when you think about what economists were predicting what would happen back in 2002 over the next 10 years, no one was predicting the recession or what was going to happen.
It's very tough to predict. I can tell you some of the things that matter: We have a new federal chairperson, Janet Yellin, so the decisions she makes will have a big influence on how the economy will matter moving forward. Here in the state, we have an election coming up.
There's typically a lot of uncertainty around hiring and firing decisions closer to the elections, because you don't know what the economic environment is going to look like, post-elections, so in that case, whoever is elected as governor will have a big impact on the economy as well.
Report: "Businesses continue to move forward"
In the 2014 Regional Economic Outlook , the Cincinnati USA Partnership for Economic Development and the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce paint a cautiously optimistic picture for the regional economy and job growth this year, although the report says this progress has been happening at a slower-than-hoped-for pace.
According to the report, the region’s businesses continue to move forward even with an unsettled economy, with the expectation of more momentum in 2014. That progress will come on the heels of a lackluster 2013 (largely due to the federal government’s sequester and shutdown) and an average 2012 that was impacted by the economy's still ongoing recovery.
As for employment, the report states that the
labor sector continues to improve, although this improvement is occurring at "an abysmally slow pace, is uneven in its improvement, and is occurring in an environment of declining labor force participation."

While the economic forecast may be a mixed bag, there are local companies looking to expand their workforce in 2014. 10 qualities employers are looking for:
According to the career consulting firm OI Partners, there are a number of qualities that employers feel will help them gain a competitive edge. The company compiled this list based on a survey of its clients and consultant
1. Multi-tasking. Employers want workers who can perform several duties simultaneously and don’t have the time or patience for “one-job” employees anymore.
2. Big-picture perspective. This includes a thorough understanding of the company’s mission and purpose and how each employee’s job and the work of their department impacts the organization as a whole.
3. Decisiveness. Decisive employees take the initiative to identify and resolve problems and examine existing issues in new and different ways.
4. Flexibility. Employees need to adapt to change, be open to new ideas, take on new responsibilities, cope with pressure, and adjust plans to meet changing needs.
5. Problem-solving. Employees need to comprehend the difference between critical and unimportant details, grasp underlying issues, and be able to simplify problems.
6. Teamwork. Workers must balance their own responsibilities with interests of the team, respect group goals, and share knowledge and expertise with others easily and frequently.
7. Sense of urgency. Employees who display a sense of urgency instill this in others, prioritize effectively, beat deadlines, exhibit high energy and aggressively explore opportunities.
8. Passion. People perform better when they are connected to and believe in the mission and purpose of their employers.
9. Above and beyond. Employers want workers who persistently search for ways to add value.
10. Long-term career with employer. Workers who regard their jobs as a learning opportunity and value the experience they acquire more than their pay checks are gaining a competitive edge over other job-seekers.
