CINCINNATI -- WCPO 9 On Your Side debuted a powerful news gathering tool Friday: Chopper 9.
Chopper 9 is a helicopter that uses advanced camera technology to scan the Tri-State for breaking news and traffic.
“Chopper 9 will provide the Tri-State the first live pictures of breaking news and traffic conditions in our area as they are unfolding,” said Jeff Brogan, vice president and general manager of WCPO 9 On Your Side. “No matter where our users and viewers are, they will be able to get exclusive close-up pictures of information they need, faster.”
Chopper 9 will be used for all newscasts and digital platforms covering breaking news -- and will be featured daily on “Good Morning Tri-State” as well as our 5 through 6 p.m. newscasts.
The sleek aircraft gives viewers live traffic conditions during rush hour, but its primary focus is breaking news coverage. Multiple cameras on-board Chopper 9 give viewers and users a unique angle on news as it happens.
“Whether they're using WCPO 9 On Your Side on a phone, a tablet, on desktop or television, our audience wants to know about important news in the Tri-State,” said Dave Peterson, general manager of WCPO Digital. “The addition of Chopper 9 gives our users the first live look at news as it develops and the perspective of a view from above.”
Chopper 9 represents the station’s commitment to getting breaking news to its viewers first.
“When news breaks, media organizations can be limited by their ability to get to a location. Now, Chopper 9 will be able to show our viewers things they haven’t seen before. It’s the only local helicopter getting you breaking news first,” said Alex Bongiorno, news director of WCPO 9 On Your Side.
Chopper 9 is a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger. Its classic design and safe, economical flight make this helicopter a popular choice for many television stations.
