Gene Rice, 92, of Wilmington, died June 21.
Rice was born in Booneville, Kentucky. He was a former resident of Waynesville, was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Philippines and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. In February. 2012, he received a certificate declaring him a Kentucky Colonel from Gov. Steve Beshear. He retired from General Motors in 1981 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Waynesville and he also enjoyed gardening, according to the Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home website, http://www.stubbsconner.com.
He is survived by seven sons, Dellus (Vicki) Rice, David (Tina) Rice, Darrell Rice (Pat Bishop), Dorman (Brenda) Rice, Marcus (Susie) Rice, Dwayne Rice and Phillip (Vanessa) Rice; three daughters, Joyce (Kenny) Naylor, Phyllis Smith (Ron Thompson) and Deanna Rice (Joe Monnin); daughter-in-law Beth Rice; 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert and Earl Rice; two sisters, Eudella (Ralph) Neeley and Velma Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
