Obituary: Gene Rice (1921-2014)


Gene Rice, 92, of Wilmington, died June 21.

Rice was born in Booneville, Kentucky. He was a former resident of Waynesville, was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Philippines and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. In February. 2012, he received a certificate declaring him a Kentucky Colonel from Gov. Steve Beshear. He retired from General Motors in 1981 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Waynesville and he also enjoyed gardening, according to the Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home website,

He is survived by seven sons, Dellus (Vicki) Rice, David (Tina) Rice, Darrell Rice (Pat Bishop), Dorman (Brenda) Rice, Marcus (Susie) Rice, Dwayne Rice and Phillip (Vanessa) Rice; three daughters, Joyce (Kenny) Naylor, Phyllis Smith (Ron Thompson) and Deanna Rice (Joe Monnin); daughter-in-law Beth Rice; 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert and Earl Rice; two sisters, Eudella (Ralph) Neeley and Velma Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
