FRANKLIN, Ohio -- Nearly 40 cars were vandalized in the Franklin area over the weekend, according to local police.

Most of the cars had side mirrors smashed. Three were in Carlisle, the rest in Franklin, according to Police Chief Russ Whitman.

No one has been charged.

"We'll never know why someone would be this stupid to go out and do these acts but hopefully we can find them and arrest them and have them answer for their charges," Whitman said.

Whitman said damages to work vehicles are felonies, even if nothing was stolen.

Chris Purvis said he thought he heard thunder outside Sunday night -- really, it was his mirror cracking.

"I heard it happen and I ran outside. I looked and thought it was probably nothing," Purvis said. "When I went to get into my car to leave for work, my driver's side mirror is knocked completely off. It was a brand new car -- I had it for two months."

Kevin Burch said his fiancée's car mirrors were smashed, too. He said he hopes someone turns in the people responsible.

"It would be the best thing to do," he said. "I mean, you got a lot of people out here that can't afford things like this and you know we got to deal with it. I mean, they need to be punished for it."
