University of Cincinnati promotes fire safety with 'After the Fire' events

CINCINNATI -- After a fire took the lives of two University of Cincinnati students on New Year's Day, UC has implemented a new fire safety initiative and will hold two events Monday with survivors of the campus fire and families of the victims.

UC’s Safe Housing task force is hosting the free events, called “After the Fire,” with sessions at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The sessions will feature personal testimony from the families of the two students who were killed in the off-campus fire, Chad Kohls and Ellen Garner.

Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons, survivors of a fatal fire at Seton Hall University in 2000, will also be featured during both sessions.

The Cincinnati premiere of  “After the Fire: A True Story of Heroes and Cowards,” will be highlighted during the events. The documentary looks at the life impact the fire had on both Llanos and Simons.

“We anticipate drawing a large attendance for this event,” said Daniel S. Cummins, assistant dean of students. “Our effort to raise fire safety awareness among faculty, staff, and students, whether on and off campus, has generated a great deal of interest.”

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Great Hall of UC’s Tangeman University Center.
