University of Cincinnati dance team wins big at International Cheer Union's World Championship

CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati dance team is celebrating after becoming world champions Thursday night at an international competition in Orlando.

The local team competed as Team USA at the 2014 International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championship. The event is the largest international cheerleading and dance team competition in the world.

More than 80 nations were expected to participate in the contest, according to the University's Department of Athletics website.

The dance team element of the battle included three categories: Freestyle (Pom), Jazz and Hip Hop.

The team, comprised of 30 to 40 girls and led by head coach Kelsey Moffe, won a gold medal Thursday in Team Cheer Hip Hip.

University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono tweeted his pride to the team after their win. He wrote, "Shoutout to our @UCDanceTeam! World champions as #TeamUSADance! #GoldMedal"

This isn't the first award for this team of girls. UC Magazine highlights the team's achievement in January, when they nabbed the top spot in the Division IA Hip Hop Category of the 2014 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championships.
