Police: Substance use may have played role in deadly accident

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Police believe substance use played a part in a multi-vehicle accident in Washington Township that resulted in the death of an Ohio man.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on State Route 247, near Buckley Road, in Washington Township Saturday evening.

A southbound 1998 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Michael Burns crossed the double yellow centerline on SR 247 and was struck by a 2001 Ford Ranger that was traveling northbound on the same road.

Burns, 58, of Seaman, Ohio, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scott Hargett, 32, of Seaman, Ohio, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for what are being described as non-life-threatening injuries by police.

No other injuries were reported.

Alcohol and/or drug use is suspected to have played a role in the crash, police said.

Police are uncertain if seat belts were worn by the drivers at the time of the collision.

The accident is still under investigation and police confirmed further information on the accident will be released as it becomes available.
