MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A motorcycle was fully engulfed in flames and its driver was found close by with severe head injuries in Middletown early Friday.

Police say they responded to N. Breiel Blvd. near Riverview Avenue after reports of a motorcycle on fire.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the motorcycle fully engulfed and Michael Smith, 33, along the curb about 130 feet from the motorcycle.

Police say Smith was driving south on Breiel Blvd. on his 1985 Honda motorcycle at about 12:15 a.m. when he ran off the roadway, struck a utility pole and was ejected from the vehicle.

A witness at JD Legends told police he saw Smith at the Merle Haggard show Thursday evening and Smith left the show on his motorcycle.

Smith suffered severe head injuries and was treated at the scene by medics before a medical helicopter flew him to Miami Valley Hospital, according to officials.

Police say he was not wearing his helmet and alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Smith is listed in critical condition.
