LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. - If shopping isn’t your thing, there's another seasonal event you and your family can take part in on Black Friday. You can head on over to the slopes in Lawrenceburg for an early start to the ski season.
Officials at Perfect North Slopes plan to open the snow-topped paradise the day after Thanksgiving, a rare happening in the three-and-a-half-decade history of the facility.
“This is our 34th season and we’ve really only been open, to the best of my recollection, three times in November,” according to Chip Perfect, general Manager and co-owner of the ski facility.
The workers at Perfect North started manufacturing "snow" on Nov. 12.
The Tri-State has endured some unseasonably cold temperatures this fall, but the best conditions for making snow were when the temperature dipped into the teens and 20s, Perfect said.
“Typically below 28 or so, depending on the humidity, but the colder it gets, the more efficient we are in snow-making. So when we had a couple of nights that were in the teens -- that’s why we’ve been able to produce so much early,” he said.
Now the snow groomers are out in full force, pushing the snow into place for opening weekend.
“The guys have done a great job of taking advantage of the weather we’ve had, and we’ve really haven’t made this much snow early," Perfect said. "We’re going to have a nice percentage of the area open for opening weekend.”
If skiing isn't your winter sport of choice, you can give tubing a try. North says even that activity will be available to patrons during the early opening.
“We usually don’t have tubing open this early in the season, but we’re going to have tubing open. This will be the earliest tubing has ever been open in our entire history,” Perfect said.
The snow bunnies who've been chomping at the bit to make it back to the slopes may notice some upgrades at Perfect North this season. The facility has added a check area for ski equipment and two new groomers that will shape the snow to perfection.
Perfect says he's most excited about some of the upgrades that will appeal to those who just want to sit back and enjoy the majesty of a picturesque almost-winter day.
“We have several things that are new and improved. The biggest one is we’ve rebuilt our entire deck, that’s much larger, and will have a lot more seating outside,” he said.
Perfect North Slopes will be open through Sunday, Dec. 1. After that, ski season will depend on the weather. If temperatures warm up or if it rains, the preexisting snow might melt, affecting whether or not the facility will open.
We're looking at you, Mother Nature.
