CINCINNATI - The Mt. Healthy student who was denied his diploma because of excessive cheering during graduation is getting national attention from many media sources — including a late night TV host.
Jimmy Kimmel had Anthony Cornist and his mom, Traci Cornist, spoke with the host on the June 7 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! via Skype.
Anthony and his mom have been the subject of media attention after excessive cheering during his graduation from Mt. Healthy High School caused administrators to withhold his diploma until community service hours were fulfilled.
Mt. Healthy City Schools superintendent Lori Handler said Anthony's family's cheering disrupted the ceremony, which was held at the Vineyard Community Church May 24.
While on the show, Kimmel requested the audience give Anthony a "long, punishment-free round of applause." After that, Kimmel allowed the audience to show their support for the diploma-less graduate by giving Handler loud boos.
Also, Kimmel joked about the fact that cheering in football — which Anthony played in high school — is usually encouraged.
When Kimmel asked the grad if he or his family member would be performed the 20 hours of community service the school is requiring to get his diploma, the grad confidently said no. Kimmel then told Anthony it wasn't a big deal and that he'd never look at the diploma ever again.
