Marquita Burch case: Trial set for babysitter charged with toddler's murder

CINCINNATI - The trial has been set for the babysitter charged with the murder of a toddler in her care.

A judge set Marquita Burch's trial date for Jan. 22, 2013, when she appeared in court Tuesday for charges that she killed 1-year-old William Cunningham in May.

Police say Burch, 27, didn't take the little boy to a doctor after hitting his head. Instead she is accused of putting his body in a garbage bag and hiding him in a cousin's home before reporting the toddler missing.

Burch called police on Friday, May 25 to report that Cunningham went missing from a park in Covington. After an intense search involving local law enforcement agencies, detectives said Burch recanted her story and told them the little boy died at her apartment on Sheehan Avenue in Hartwell. Officers then found the boy's body inside the closet on Winton Road after Burch told police she had moved the body.

If convicted on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, two counts of endangering children, tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse. Burch could face life in prison.
