Trustee-elect hit, killed by truck

BATAVIA, Ohio - The man who hit and killed a newly-elected Batavia Township trustee was sentenced to five years in prison Monday.

Last November, Jack Richards was driving on Judd Road when he tried to pass a garbage truck. He drove off the road and struck and killed Jim Bushman while he was taking out his trash.

Richards pleaded no contest to aggravated vehicular homicide last week. He offered an apology of full regret in court Monday.

"I didn't mean to do this, but i did it. If I could take it back, I would...I don't know exactly how I feel, but understand if I could trade places with him, I would," said Richards.

As part of his sentencing, Richards will have to repay $12,000 in funeral costs to the victim's family and complete his GED. His license is permanently suspended until all sentencing requirements are complete.
