COVINGTON, Ky. – Four families were in shelters Saturday night after a strong gas odor prompted firefighters to evacuate a portion of their neighborhood the day before.

The evacuations were ordered after a retaining wall collapsed in Latonia on Caroline Avenue near 34th Street, close to the train tressel about 5:30 a.m. Friday. The collapse caused water and gas mains to rupture.

The gas smell pervaded the area, residents said.

"It was enough to evacuate. The business across the street was shut down. They have reopened,” Covington Battalion Chief John Martin said just before noon.

Water service was shut off while crews worked on the gas and water lines.

Trains were still running. CSX crews came out and checked the stability of the tressel.

Investigators said ongoing construction could be part of the reason for the wall collapse.

The families are now in the care of the Red Cross until they get the 'OK' to return home, which authorities say won't be for at least three weeks, well after the holidays.
