INDEPENDENCE, Ky. - Attention all local Kroger-goers! Thursday morning marks the grand opening of the first Kroger Marketplace in Independence.

The new store, located at 1700 Declaration Drive, will open its doors at 7 a.m. In comparison to the current Kroger location, the new grocery is three times its size.

In addition to regular products, the store will offer home décor, a kitchen place department, home storage solutions, office supplies, toys, furniture, apparel and the first Starbucks in the area.

Men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, shoes and accessories will be available at the store. Brand names like Sketcher’s, New Balance, Russell Athletics, Carhartt and Signature Levi-Strauss will be sold at the new location.

Independence Kroger Marketplace will feature a Baby World department, which will offer cribs, strollers, car seats, clothes and more.

The store has a patriotic theme with a picture display of employees and residents who are serving or have served in the military. The "Veterans Wall" features 250 photographs.

“Independence is such a close-knit community,” said Jim Betas, store manager and a 23-year Kroger employee. “The new store has been much-anticipated by our neighbors.  We’re excited to offer our shoppers more, and a wider variety of products. We’re focused on not only everyday favorites but on new and exciting specialty items and the apparel departments….this is just a Kroger like you’ve never seen.  We really are the one stop shopping destination for the Independence area.”

The new Kroger is still looking to hire 175 new employees.

The first 300 customers to walk in the doors Thursday morning will receive a $10 Kroger gift card and coupons will be given to the first 300 customers beginning at 7 a.m. every day of the grand opening weekend.
