INDEPENDENCE, Ky. -- A 25-year-old Walton man who police say stabbed a friend to death during a violent argument on New Year's Day was arraigned on murder charges Thursday in a Kenton County courtroom.
Investigators said the two men were at a party together on New Year's Eve, a few hours before the murder took place.
Matthew Smith killed 39-year-old Eric Schreiber at about 7 a.m. behind a secluded duplex on England Drive, just off Route 17, according to police.
Neither of the men lived there.
Smith could face life in prison or the death penalty and is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 8.
