US Capitol on lockdown after reports of shooting

FORT MITCHELL, Ky. -- Beechwood Middle School students, on a trip in Washington, D.C., are all accounted for and were not near the site of the Capitol Hill shooting Thursday.

Beechwood students planned their educational trip to D.C. before the government shutdown went into action. Due to closures, students were limited to access of museums and monuments. Senator Mitch McConnell offered to take them to the Capitol building, which is where they were reported to be earlier Thursday.

Confirmation from the school superintendent said the children were at the Newseum at the time of the shooting. The principal has sent email notifications to staff and parents notifying them that the students are all reported to be safe.
