EDGEWOOD, Ky. – Students at Dixie Heights High School spent a couple of hour outside Wednesday as emergency crews dealt with a gas leak in a science lab.

A student in the classroom reported smelling gas coming from a loose Bunsen burner hose to a teacher shortly before 10 a.m., according to Kenton County School District employee Jess Dykes.

In response, the teacher turned off the room’s gas valve and evacuated the students from the room. The teacher then reported the incident to school officials who evacuated the rest of the building and called emergency responders at 9:53 a.m.

“The teacher acted appropriately,” Dykes said.

Duke Energy crews arrived on the scene at about 10:50 a.m. to deal with the gas leak in the science lab. Students were allowed back into the school a short time later.
